We have used and continue to use essential oils in ministering to Robert. Before we discuss the specific oils used and why, it is important that the reader understand that essential oils run the gamut in quality and efficacy. Essential oils are not regulated and so must be purchased from a reputable supplier. Poor quality oils are not only a waste of money but can be harmful. We use only Young Living brand therapeutic grade essential oils. If you decide to go this route and need to sign up with Young Living, please consider using Beverly’s distributor number 793588. We began using essential oils with our oldest son to treat chronic ear infections. After we were able to avoid surgery, we became convinced of their utility and they are the first line of defense in Mom’s medical chest. When Robert drowned it was a normal response for us to reach for ‘the oils’ to address everything from hospital related secondary infection, to regenerating neurons, to helping with sleep, to comforting Mom and Dad as they learned a new way of life in caring for Robert.
Some of the oils we use are listed below. There are now hundreds of peer reviewed articles on PubMed about using therapeutic grade essential oils. Please, do your own research.
Thieves Blend – Thieves essential oil blend has both anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. We diffused Thieves in the hospital to prevent secondary infection. We also used Thieves hand sanitizer frequently. Thieves has been proven effective against MRSA. We also use Thieves cleaning concentrate as the primary cleaning agent in our home as it is non-toxic to humans and pets.
Cedarwood – Cedarwood is oxygenating to the brain. It is also calming. We use a homemade Cedarwood spray with Robert at bedtime to help him relax and get to sleep.
Copaiba – Copaiba activates cannabanoid receptors that calm the mind and trigger a powerful natural response to inflammation.
Frankincense – Frankincense contains high levels of sesquiterpenes which increase the secretion of antibodies, endorphins and neurotransmitters.
Helichrysum – Helichrysum is amazing for inflammation. I have watched an ‘egg’ on the head of one of my kids literally dissolve after a drop of Helichrysum was applied. As brain injury involves destructive inflammation, Helichrysum is a must have.
Lavender – Lavendar is the all purpose ‘calming’ oil. Also good for allergy attacks.
Peppermint – Peppermint is great for tummy upset, sea-sickness and occasional ‘morning breath’.
Blends – There are a number of purpose made oil blends that are pre-diluted for use with children. Geneyus with all of the ‘brain’ oils and Tummygize for stomach upset are two that we use regularly.
